The smartphone market is experiencing a really strong strengthening, as evidenced by the company's market results. Xiaomi. I fastest growing brand in the global market.
Fourth quarter 2024 results
According to the latest report from IDC companies (Global Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracking Report), the smartphone market is really doing well. In Q4 2024, device shipments increased by 2,4% year-on-year. The resulting value is 331,7 million smartphones, and this is the sixth consecutive year of growth.
Full-year results are expected to grow by 6,4% to 1,24 billion devices, following two consecutive years of declines.
Market trends
Growth in 2024 was driven by replacement demand and performance gains in low-end and mid-range devices. IDC predicts slower growth in 2025 as the extended device replacement cycle dampens demand for new devices.
How did individual brands fare? Apple and Samsung maintained their top two positions both in the quarter and for the year. However, both brands suffered year-over-year market declines and declines in device shipment share, driven by strong momentum from Chinese brands like Xiaomi.
And Xiaomi was the fastest growing brand among the top five, ranking third in Q4 2024. The tight race between Chinese brands is confirmed by the results of Transsion (the group behind brands like Tecno or Infinix). Transsion has the same quarterly results as Vivo. It also has the same full-year results as China's OPPO.
If we add up the Chinese companies, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Honor, Huawei, Lenovo and other smaller brands accounted for 4% of global smartphone shipments in Q2024 56. This is the highest share of Chinese brands in history. China and Asia remain the largest markets, but these brands are also expanding rapidly in Europe and Africa. The success is mainly seen in low-end and mid-range devices.
Huawei also stood out, focusing on the upper mid-range, high-end and ultra-high-end segments, strengthening its leadership in the Chinese market.
Expert insights from IDC
Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of IDC's European Regions, emphasized that "Chinese brands' performance in the last quarter was excellent. They are truly changing the face of the global smartphone landscape. By dominating the low-end and mid-range segments, they can gain a strong position in the overall market, especially outside of China."
