At its last press conference in December, Xiaomi officially introduced us to the thirteenth generation of its own superstructure with the name MIUI 13. The software is based on the Android 12 operating system and will be part of the new flagships within the Xiaomi 12 series.
We tested MIUI 13 from Xiaomi.EU
We have a customized ROM from a well-known source, the developers of Miuios.cz, respectively Xiaomi.EU. This ROM is directly based on the Chinese version of MIUI 13 and thus brings us some of the innovations that are in this version of the superstructure or. they can also be part of the global version of MIUI.
MIUI 13 from the workshop xiaomi.eu we tested it on the Xiaomi Mi 11 editorial smartphone, which definitely has no shortage of performance. There is a hybrid RAM 8 GB + 3 GB, but also internal storage 128 GB or a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor.
Want to know how this testing turned out? In that case, definitely read on.
New UI graphics
Labeled software MIUI 13 brings, in addition to functional, also a number of graphic modifications. We can observe these the first time you turn on your smartphone. Not only is the font modified, the new one is called MiSans, but also the elements within the system. The system is cleaner and retains its minimalist design language.
The manufacturer has prepared new and unique wallpapers, as well as a modified application grid. You can choose from grids from 4 x 7 applications up to 5 x 7 applications, while in the settings you can also choose icons without a description of individual applications.
In development MIUI 13 The relevant Xiaomi development team has teamed up with the “Beauty of Science” project, and the result of this collaboration is a new design of “Always-On” screen dials on devices that support this feature. However, this does not end there, the system animations are also updated and the manufacturer is also working on others.
The control center has also undergone a slight modification, which this time contains new elements for controlling the music being played. You can also add a group of applications to your home screen in the form of your most used pieces.
The system is a bit more colorful and you can feel that the manufacturer has tried to simplify access to individual functions. Some elements are a kind of evolution after the previous generation of MIUI 12.5, which we also tested in the editorial office. You will find the review in the following link.
System security and optimization
The main improvement of the new generation of MIUI 13 is mainly the correction of errors and optimization of the operation of the superstructure itself. This step is also praised by a number of fans who have already had the opportunity to try working with a smartphone or tablet after the latest update.
Regarding bug fixes, already at the beginning of the December press conference, the director of the MIUI team, Jin Fan, told us that we had managed to eliminate up to 425 bugs that were reported by users.
In addition, the Chinese producer also considered the safety of the users themselves. And also to secure sensitive user data. Due to increasingly effective hacker attacks, the superstructure has received new and innovative security features.
The MIUI 13 includes a more secure way to unlock your phone with your face, making it harder for unauthorized people to break into your device, such as a photo. Additional data security measures also run in the background, and are part of the Optimization Toolkit. However, the manufacturer has not yet provided us with the details.
An equally significant improvement is the acceleration of the superstructure and its smoother operation. We appreciated this response directly on the flagship smartphone, and the animations are not only faster, but also have a slightly modified scrolling transition (we tested both 60 Hz and 120 Hz modes). The extension did not have a problem with more demanding multitasking, for example, when playing content from YouTube Premium in the background (window-in-window mode).
The user experience is really a bit better, the environment is smooth, intuitive and without jams, while we also compared it with the previous version MIUI 12.5.6, which we also use in the editorial office on a daily basis, on the smartphone Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G .
MIUI widgets 13
Although the Chinese version of MIUI 13 also offers innovative and interactive widgets that you can use both on the home screen and in the control center, ROM from Xiaomi.EU does not offer this feature yet. However, this does not mean that it cannot appear in one of the upcoming updates.
We at the editorial office believe that Xiaomi will keep this function within the global ROM version, and fast control of individual application functions inspired by the competing iOS operating system will be a reality on our Xiaomi smartphones as well.
For now, however, you can see the design of the new widgets in the Chinese version of the superstructure, in selected built-in applications, in the photos above. We also bring you a comparison with the current version of widgets, which you already know well from Xiaomi smartphones.
MIUI 13Pad
However, the MIUI 13 in the smartphone version is not the only novelty. The Chinese manufacturer has also prepared a modified version this time MIUI 13Pad designed for tablets. This version is for new tablets Xiaomi Pad 5 and Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro, and is currently being distributed to Chinese pieces of these devices.
If we take a closer look at this version, it mainly focuses on advanced multitasking (multiple applications on the screen, floating windows, application bar, etc.), which will be a bit easier to access.
The developers have also worked on several thousand applications - owned by Xiaomi, but also third parties, which will not only be an enlarged version compared to smartphones, but will offer a different display of controls that draws from a larger diagonal.
We have also prepared a separate article about this version for you on our website. You will find him in the following link.
MIUI Family (MIUI Home, MIUI TV and more)
However, the tablet version is not the only one. Xiaomi is trying to connect its product family and that is why it has officially introduced other versions, such as for smart home or smart watches.
Miui home is a version designed for a variety of smart home devices, such as smart speakers with a touch screen, so you can control various connected gadgets faster and more intuitively. In addition to the smartphone, you will also find representation in the control of smart home products in other versions.
However, there will also be a new version for smart watches, which will also offer smart home control and integration of third-party applications. This new version of the system will only be available for a pair of models at this time - xiaomi watch s1 a Xiaomi Watch Color 2.
An interesting superstructure is MIUI TV, which could be part of smart TVs or various TV boxes. The full name of the new version is MIUI TV Enterprise Edition, but we do not yet know the list of supported models.
Xiaomi is trying to create MIUI Family, a family of Xiaomi products that will communicate intuitively with each other through the embedded software. This link is really very tempting, but we must emphasize that only the Chinese version is currently considered. Its global alternative has not yet been announced.
List of smartphones that support the update
The new update is part of the twelfth generation devices, namely Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12X and Xiaomi 12 Pro. But what about older smartphones? The first wave of updates should arrive in the first quarter of 2022. These should be the following smartphones:

Didn't find your smartphone on the list? It doesn't matter at all. Xiaomi is also planning another wave of updates, with older generations of devices expected. However, they will be on the line later, during the year 2022.
We also know the dates of the original Chinese version of the update. As for global localization with slightly modified features for European customers, we have no further information available on this version yet.
However, if you still want to try the features of the Chinese system MIUI 13, we recommend ROM from the source xiaomi.euwhich we also used for the purposes of this testing. You will find it for download together with the instructions in the following link.
Final evaluation: MIUI 13
MIUI, as a software superstructure of the Android operating system, was practically the first real product from the group that formed the basis of Xiaomi. Today, it is the thirteenth generation of innovation that definitely has something to offer us.
We tested the superstructure on a flagship smartphone, and we felt a significant fluidity of this system in everyday use. We were also pleased with the new animations, font or security enhancements that every user will appreciate.
On the contrary, the absence of new types of widgets will freeze, but they may arrive in one of the other software updates. It remains to be hoped that Xiaomi this time eliminates fewer features in the global version compared to the past.
Hello.
I have MI11 bought in Slovakia. Can I officially install this update? Will I then receive updates normally? Will there be a problem with the warranty?
D.
Mato.
Hello, officially not possible, you need to unlock the bootloader and flash the system via fastboot. It's not for everyone. We recommend waiting for the official OTA update, which will be released after the introduction of the global version of MIUI 13.
