The advent of folding smartphones seems inevitable. According to the latest reports, smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi and Huawei have signed a contract with the company Samsung Display on the supply of flexible displays.
The first folding smartphones have already been shown
Both brands, Xiaomi and Huawei, have already demonstrated the first attempts brought by folding devices. For Xiaomi, it was just videos with a mysterious prototype, or a tightly curved display in Mi Mix Alpha. The Huawei brand has launched a real flexible smartphone Huawei Mate X.
For Xiaomi, the previous supplier of flexible display panels was the manufacturer Visionox. He secured the supply in small quantities, which was sufficient for the development or launch of the prototype. However, Visionox is not ready for a massive start of production and is not able to supply Xiaomi with the required number of flexible displays.
Xiaomi planned to introduce her real serial model of the folding phone this year, but it is possible that she will not be able to change it due to a change of supplier. In this case, it will not only be a delayed delivery, but the manufacturer will have to redesign the existing structure of the folding device due to a different type of display.
However, it can be said that in Xiaomi they start again from the floor, as the flexible display is the primary part of the device and everything else needs to be adapted to it.
However, the surprise is the work of the Huawei brand, which also confirmed the change of supplier of flexible displays. While the Huawei Mate X brought its first folding smartphone with the BOE panel, they are already planning the future with the Samsung Dipslay manufacturer.
This is mainly due to the better quality, but also the quantity of deliveries of the technological giant Samsung. Huawei officials have confirmed that Samsung Display will become the primary supplier of flexible panels, with BOE acting as another supplier for the time being.
The Galaxy Fold model was a success for the Samsung Display
The recent success of the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone seems to have strengthened Samsung Display's reputation in the market. In addition to Xiaomi and Huawa, other major Chinese mobile phone manufacturers such as OPPO and Vivo have been shown to be interested in supplying displays from the company.
However, the primary focus of the Samsung Display will be on the development and supply of flexible panels for the smartphone manufacturer Samsung. After the launch of the Galaxy Fold - a cover sometime before the MWC exhibition, Samsung Display will focus on the Huawei Mate X2 and the second-generation Samsung Galaxy Fold.
In the meantime, deliveries of panels for the Xiaomi folding smartphone should also begin, which will probably not be introduced until 2021. It seems that Xiaomi will lag significantly behind the competition in this segment.
On the other hand, there is the advantage that allows the manufacturer to learn from the mistakes of the competition and finally introduces a top and trouble-free folding model with a modern design.
