Many of our readers who bought a new Xiaomi smartphone in the second half of this year and Redmi, you must have noticed that their phone contains pre-installed applications Google Phone a Google News. The competent authorities explained why this is so.
Why were the original applications replaced?
Technology giant Xiaomi is bringing to market smartphones that they are equipped with the Android operating system and the MIUI software extension. This extension brings its own graphical environment, but also its own set of applications.
These are applications such as Phone, Messaging, Calculator, File manager, Notes, Browser, Camera, Gallery, and more.
In newer Xiaomi smartphones, Redmi however, the original MIUI apps were Phone and Messages replaced by Google Phone and Google Messaging. The first of these was a smartphone Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro and all the brand's smartphones that come after it already have this novelty.
Many long-time Xiaomi smartphone users, including us, were slightly disappointed by this move by Xiaomi, as Google applications brought a different graphical environment and deprived our devices of some features.
Xiaomi therefore received a wave of criticism and expressions of dissatisfaction. After almost half a year, the competent people explained what led them to this step.
According to the announcement on the official Mi Community this change applies all smartphones in global (MI) and European (EEA) versionswhich were launched after the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro, including this model.
The reason is the protection of personal data and new laws of the EU and other countries of the Western world. Xiaomi smartphones and Redmi in the Chinese(CN) or Indian(IN) version these changes did not affect.
New applications have brought changes
After reviewing the new Google Phone and Google News applications, users found that in addition to a significant change in the graphical environment, they had lost some of their favorite features. It is mainly about the possibility of recording calls, but also a change in working with contacts.
For example, it is not possible to go to Contacts and their full management in the Phone application. The user must leave the application and go to the Contacts application, where he can already add, edit or delete his contacts.
New contacts cannot be stored in the smartphone's memory or to SIM cards, but only to a Google or Mi account. In connection with this, the environment of the Contacts application has also changed, where several possibilities of managing contacts on the Google account have also been added at the expense of the MIUI interface.
We were caught by the change and were unpleasantly surprised by the first, as many in the Xiaomi Planet editorial office use the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro smartphone. We have to admit that the habit is an iron shirt and we miss the old MIUI applications. However, using the new Google Phone and Google Messaging apps is no tragedy.
Call recording is said to return
Most of all, however, users lack the ability to record phone calls. Xiaomi officials promise that this feature will return to the application in 2020. It is questionable how Xiaomi wants to enforce this, as the conditions for recording calls are significantly limited and monitored by EU law and by Google itself, which also blocks this function for third-party applications in the Play Store.
For "orthodox" MIUI fans, however, there is one option, and that is to replace the original global version of the software on the smartphone with a downloaded customized version, the so-called customized ROM from the Slovak and Czech MIUI community on miuios.cz.
Although this step brings some risks from interventions in the smartphone, the original Phone and Messages applications from MIUI will bring to the menu.
