Photography and video capture applications on Xiaomi smartphones are constantly evolving for the better. Here you will find various filters, a number of settings or interesting video effects, which we also wrote about in the review at Xiaomi Mi 11. But did you know that with this application you can easily and efficiently scan documents?
In this guide, we'll look at how to digitize your documents and what options this feature offers.
Easy document scanning
In difficult times of pandemics, most institutions try to work online. Surely you also needed to send someone a scanned document, invoice or a signed contract. Many people do not have a scanner at home, so they reach for the simplest option - take a picture with a smartphone.
The more honest ones will crop such a photo so that it contains only the document itself and possibly save it as a PDF. We'll look at how the camera application itself can help us scan documents in MIUI. Directly from this application, you can conveniently digitize various sheets, documents or invoices, which are automatically cut or converted to black and white using artificial intelligence.
How to do it?
The whole process is very simple. Just open the camera app, which is integrated in every MIUI smartphone. Then choose an option More (More) in the camera menu, and there you will see the item Documents (Documents). We did this procedure using a Redmi K40 Pro smartphone.
Then all you have to do is focus on any document and take a picture of it. At that point, the application automatically crops the captured document and saves only this crop. This eliminates the need to manually crop excess parts of the photo.
There are also shooting options in black and white or with a filter to enhance the scanned document. These filters can be applied during photography, but also later in the gallery.
You can also save a scanned document directly as a PDF in the gallery application. You can find this option by clicking on More (More) in the photo gallery.
There is also an interesting feature digitization of documents. This option is in the middle of the top of the screen, in document shooting mode. The application will prompt you to take a photo of the first and then the second side of the document, which will then be stored on one side. You can easily print the document saved in this way. You can use it if someone needs an ID card from you, for example.
Recognize text from a scanned document
You don't even need to install any applications to detect text from the captured document. This functionality is contained in the gallery application itself.
- Go to the gallery and choose your scanned document
- Select an option More (More) and then the item Text recognition (Recognize text)
It takes the application a while, but after completing these steps, it can recognize the text from the image, which you can then copy, edit or even save to the notes application. Minor errors can be found in the recognized text, but this feature is still great and very useful. Just copy the recognized text from the photo and you can send it to someone either by e-mail or using another application.

- save as PDF
- digitization of documents
- text recognition
This option is missing in Redmi note 8 for. There are no more documents in the camera.
Redmi 8 does not have the ability to scan documents.
Redmi note 9 Pro does not have the ability to create PDFs or text recognition.
Even in the gallery on Mi 9 I don't have:
- save as PDF
- digitization of documents
- text recognition
I have it in Redmi 8, but after the document is photographed, the quality is very low. Is it possible to set the resolution somewhere?
The camera seems to set the resolution itself.
